Why do I get the feeling I’m going to regret posting this article? All below the fold, content warning of NOT WORK SAFE.

Kappa Girl

First picked up on this story in the China Economic Report about trojans being attached to pictures of the “Kappa Girl,” taken from a video of the same name. According to 360 Security, the hackers are exploiting a flaw in Adobe Reader/ Acrobat to disseminate the malicious program. Had no idea who the “Kappa Girl” was so I did a search and found that the Shanghaiist had the full backstory on “Kappa Girl”:

A 12 minute long sex video of a female employee working at the Kappa store in the east building of the Shanghai No.1 Department Store on Nanjing Lu has recently been spreading like wildfire on the Chinese internet via Bittorrent and the Chinese peer-to-peer application Xunlei, catapulting the search term ‘Kappa女’ (or “Kappa Girl”) into one of the top ten search terms on Google China and unleashing a ‘human flesh search engine’ where netizens worked together to track her down, publishing her private information such as her name, her pictures and her QQ number.

(There is more on the story at their website but once again, not work safe)

As soon as it hit the internet the video went viral and became one of the top Chinese searches. Of course Chinese hackers, who know a thing or two about social engineering, saw this as an opportunity to exploit the popularity of the video and started attaching malware.

The moral(s) of the story…don’t take XXX videos of yourself…AND…don’t look for this video on the internet…AND…don’t post the story on your blog.
