Rising Anti-Virus has just announced its new trojan monitoring site that tracks malicious websites throughout the country.

The website displays the top-5 malicious sites:

A malicious website distribution chart:

Also a malicious website intercept line and impact chart.

I’ve provided a link to the English translation by Google so you get an idea of what the website does. While the intercept chart still works in the translated version, you have to switch back to the Chinese version to make the distribution chart function.

A large number of Chinese discussion forums were thrown into chaos when the Rising Anti-Virus company forced an automatic upgrade from their free 2008 edition to the fee-charged 2009 edition. From most reports, the upgrade took place in the middle of the night without permission, causing computers and Out Look Express to freeze up.

By the afternoon of the 6th, a large number of Chinese users found that they were unable to post comments on their normal website forums. Some users reported that the forum webpages simply appeared blank. Not only were large forums such as NetEase and Taobao effected, business website forums also suffered from the same problems.

According to reports, the accident was compounded by the large number of people using Rising Anti-Virus and the large percentage of discussion forums powered by the Discuz system.

Investigation showed that there were many online complaints about Rising’s new 2009 edition causing problems with e-mail, freezing up, blue screen..etc. According to IT experts, there was a problem with the new 2009 edition allowing Java Script applications to run.

The newest computer virus stats from Rising Anti-Virus, taken from Jan-Nov of 2008, show a 12.16% increase over the the same time period last year. Rising intercepted over nine million new virus samples with 83.4% of the sample comprised of trojans (5,903,695 samples) and back door viruses (1,863,722 samples). The majority of these viruses were used by hackers to steal virtual property.

While the section of the article I read doesn’t mention it, my guess is that these are third quarter results. If you compare the current chart with 2007, it only shows a 9.86% increase to date. So, keep in mind I’m a linguist, 2007 probably covered the whole year while the 2008 number only covered the first three quarters from Jan-Nov.

The pie chart above gives totals for 2008 as coming from 64% trojans, 20% back door viruses, 12% other viruses and 4% worms.
