Chinese hackers taking advantage of Microsoft “Black Screen of Death”

By now most of you have heard of Microsoft’s attempt to rid itself of pirated copies of Windows in China.  This has caused a wave of fear in the average Chinese user, thinking their computers are about to be turned into one big paperweight.

The Micropoint Anti-Virus Company has posted a warning stating that hackers have wasted no time in taking advantage of this fear.  While users are furiously searching the internet for a solution to this problem, the hackers are busy posting links to downloads that promise a solution.  The only problem is that these are fake solutions and they come bundled with malware such as the Gray Pigeon trojan designed to allow remote control of the computer.

Welcome to Chinese hacker social engineering 101.  Or, we could try and force the dialectic of thesis, antithesis, synthesis: anti-piracy program, anti-anti-piracy program, hacking.  In the Chinese hacker community, the conflict between thesis and antithesis is always resolved with more hacking.

Chinese hacker instructional video of the Gray Pigeon trojan

One of the clearest instructional videos I have seen on how to use the Gray Pigeon trojan horse.  I haven’t tried to translate the video but thought it might be of interest to some of our more technically inclinded audience.  The first part describes how to use the program and the second part shows how the information is collected from an infected computer.

Damn Pigeons! 灰鸽子

pigeon.JPG

First, let me start you off with a little background on the Gray Pigeon Trojan here.  Great stuff, they even upset their own people enough to force them to stop production.  A good thing too because that program was turning up in a lot of government systems, like here for example.

However, just like every 80’s horror movie, the thing just refuses to die.  So,  the announcement posted on 2 Dec 07, at hx99.net (previous link removed, page taken down by hx99.net) saying they were making a come back didn’t come as too much of a shock.

The old disbandment message dated 21 March 07 is still  on the front page of the Gray Pigeon website (why does the one pigeon look like a hummingbird…who knows.):

Just as promised, their fresh postings on 18 and 22 Nov 07 promise a revival of the site.   The posting on 22 Nov 07 could use some IT input on the screenshots.

The text is too much for my Chinese but maybe some of you IT guys could provide some insight.
