Chinese hacker e-mail espionage?

It seems that even prior to the Melbourne Film Festival controversy, Australia’s diplomats may have been the targets of e-mail espionage attempts:

AUSTRALIA’S diplomats have been warned about a fake email amid concerns it could be part of a cyber espionage attempt, possibly originating from China.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed yesterday staff had been briefed about a suspicious email sent to several staff last month. The source of the email is under investigation by the department’s communications experts.

Australia: National security concerns over Chinese espionage could derail $15B broadband network

Huawei once again makes the news as Australia ponders allowing them to work in partnership with Optus to build a 15 billion dollar broadband network:

Security agencies will closely examine the bid lodged by Singtel Optus, which is believed to propose the involvement of Chinese telecommunications equipment-maker Huawei Technologies to help build its network. Huawei was the subject of a US congressional investigation on national security grounds this year after legislators expressed concern about its links to the Chinese military and intelligence apparatus. The concerns led Huawei to withdraw from its joint $US2.2billion ($3.3billion) bid to buy a stake in US internet router and networking giant 3Com.

Chinese hackers…underachievers! Only responsible for 88% of attacks on Australian government websites.

CHINESE computer hackers are responsible for 88 per cent of attacks on Australian government web sites, according to web security company TippingPoint.
