Chinese discussion forums thrown into chaos

Published by at 4:45 am under China internet

A large number of Chinese discussion forums were thrown into chaos when the Rising Anti-Virus company forced an automatic upgrade from their free 2008 edition to the fee-charged 2009 edition. From most reports, the upgrade took place in the middle of the night without permission, causing computers and Out Look Express to freeze up.

By the afternoon of the 6th, a large number of Chinese users found that they were unable to post comments on their normal website forums. Some users reported that the forum webpages simply appeared blank. Not only were large forums such as NetEase and Taobao effected, business website forums also suffered from the same problems.

According to reports, the accident was compounded by the large number of people using Rising Anti-Virus and the large percentage of discussion forums powered by the Discuz system.

Investigation showed that there were many online complaints about Rising’s new 2009 edition causing problems with e-mail, freezing up, blue screen..etc. According to IT experts, there was a problem with the new 2009 edition allowing Java Script applications to run.

Thanks to you, I always enjoy reading in this website. But I didn’t know that your site is blocked in China?! I just came back from China and when I tried to access the website, there response is “time-out”.

Welcome back! Hope you had a great time in China. Do you go there often?

We actually had a Chinese hacker who left a comment on the website with a great term in it:

He said we were “GFWed” in China. Before that, I had never heard of the Great Firewall used as a verb.

I visit my family in China once a year (maybe twice). I heard the term “GFW” when they blocked Google a few years back. This is my first time to hear a verb form of “GFW”.

I didn’t know this site is blocked too! I would say “Here is your free bill for a great advertisement”. You must be pretty famous out there.

looking better … but as my mother in-law told me once (god bless her ,,, yikes) to get the lion you have to play the pig. it does not feel great but it is a slow process to get information into the view of the right eyes. i have a bunch of stuff on my open data site that i just leave as i am not sure what and who and how much to release. my philosphy is the least intervention with the needed result is the best. this is not my only aspiration in life here it is just an active denfence i wish to employ. things will un-fold as they will and if i can just defend myself and not create any further damage i will be a happy and content person for a peiord of time. anyway, i enjoy this site and find it a diversion from things and the news is pretty accurate when it is not just fantasy and people day dreaming. stay in touch.
